Terms of Use

Last updated: 28 September 2026.

By using shell.trainer (the "site") you agree to these terms. They are short because the site is simple: free educational content, a terminal simulator that runs in your browser, and an optional paid ebook.

Using the content

You are welcome to read, practise with and print everything on the site for your own learning, and to link to any page. Teachers may print the cheat sheets for their classes. What you may not do is republish the text, the lessons or the cheat sheets elsewhere: on another website, in a course you sell, or as training material you distribute, without written permission.

Short quotations with a link back to the page they come from are fine.

The terminal simulator

The terminal is a simulation that runs entirely in your browser with its own virtual filesystem. It cannot touch your computer, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. It reproduces the behaviour of the commands it supports as faithfully as we can, but it is a learning tool, not a real shell: some options and edge cases are simplified.

No warranty

The explanations and examples are written carefully and reviewed, but they are provided "as is". Commands such as rm, chmod, dd or rsync --delete can destroy data on a real system. Check what a command does before running it on a machine you care about, and keep backups. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for damage caused by running commands you learned here.

The ebook

The Linux Command Line Handbook is sold as a DRM-free PDF for personal use by the buyer. You may keep copies on your own devices and print it for yourself; please do not share the file or upload it anywhere. The purchase is processed by our store, which acts as merchant of record and whose terms, refund policy and invoicing apply at checkout. Updates to the same edition are free for buyers.

Advertising and links

The site may show ads served by third parties and links to external websites. We do not control and are not responsible for their content. How ads use cookies is explained in the privacy policy.

Changes

We may update these terms as the site evolves; the date above shows the latest version. Continued use of the site after a change means you accept the new terms.
